For a large commercial project in a major metropolitan area, we uncovered a startling fact: 1,123 trips were made to a single Home Depot store in just one year.

Here's what we found:

  • The company had a preferred supplier for office supplies with negotiated pricing and a rebate agreement.

  • Employees were pushed to make Office Supplies purchases through the eProcurement system, which reflected reduced spend.

  • Instead, employees were purchasing from several Office Supplies vendors on their PCards, outside of the eProcurement system, often leaving the office to do so.

  • This "invisible" spend would have cost them their entire rebate AND their negotiated pricing.

By identifying this issue quickly, the company was able to course-correct, redirecting spend to their preferred supplier, and secure a rebate. What they thought was savings turned out to be a potential major loss.
